According to Spanish police, a man was arrested in Murcia for allegedly employing deepfake software to deceive a certificate provider's video identity verification system. The suspect reportedly made 38 attempts, targeting more than 30 citizens, to acquire digital signatures for financial fraud. Investigators stated that the suspect appeared in video calls holding a forged national ID card, while AI software reportedly altered his face on screen to match the document's photo. The alleged fraud was uncovered when the digital mask reportedly glitched during a live verification call, revealing his true face. Police also reported that the perpetrator used household spotlights to simulate security features on forged documents, balanced counterfeit documents in front of the webcam to recreate holograms, and used VPNs to anonymize connections. The investigation reportedly traced over 320 phone lines linked to 24 mobile devices, many registered using stolen identities. Upon arrest, a laptop with high-level encryption, phones, and storage devices were reportedly seized. The man faces charges for falsifying official documents.
