Singapore’s Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Act 2024 prohibits the publication, boosting, sharing, and reposting of deepfake content depicting election candidates during campaign periods. The law was operationalized for Singapore’s May 2025 general election.

What it covers

  • Digitally generated or manipulated content depicting election candidates saying or doing things they did not in fact say or do
  • Both AI-generated deepfakes and traditional editing methods (Photoshop, dubbing, splicing)
  • All publication, boosting, sharing, and reposting from issuance of the writ of election until close of polling

Requirements and penalties

  • Up to S$1,000 fine and 12 months’ imprisonment for individuals
  • Up to S$1 million fine for non-compliant social media platforms
  • Returning Officer can issue corrective directions including takedown, blocking, and disabling access for Singapore users
  • Candidates can request Returning Officer review of suspect content
