Reported 'Army Swipe Card' scam targeting small businesses
A Reddit user reported encountering a scam targeting small businesses, where fraudsters impersonate army personnel and claim to use a special 'army swipe card' (possibly a deepfake image) to trick victims into revealing UPI PINs for fraudulent transactions.
A Reddit user posted a public service announcement for small businesses regarding an "Army Swipe Card scam." The scam, reportedly common on Facebook Marketplace and elsewhere, targets businesses that accept UPI payments. Fraudsters pose as army personnel and claim they can only pay via a special "army swipe card," sending a picture of a supposed grocery card, which the user suspects is a deepfake. They then attempt to call the victim to explain the payment procedure, ultimately asking for a UPI PIN to steal money. The Reddit user encountered this scam but did not proceed, noting that this type of scam has been increasing recently.
