Individual reports romance scam involving stolen photos and unverified videos

An individual reported being a victim of a romance scam involving stolen photos and videos. The victim suspects the videos may have been deepfakes, despite AI scans indicating they were not AI-generated, and has reported the incident to federal agencies and local police.

An individual reported falling victim to a romance scam, which they subsequently reported to federal agencies and local police. The scammer reportedly used photos that, upon reverse image search, appeared on international dating apps but not on legitimate websites, leading the victim to believe the content was stolen. The scammer also engaged in a one-minute video call and sent short videos (under 20 seconds) over a month and a half. While the victim initially believed the videos were genuine, post-incident AI scans determined them to be real and not AI-generated. Despite these scan results, the victim remains confused and questions whether advanced deepfake software could have bypassed the AI scans, or if the scammer is an international criminal or someone whose identity was stolen.
